panorama2With a 94 % of the absorption capacity of the greenhouse effect gases, referred to 2010 data, and a strongly increasing trend for the next year, the province of Siena is about to reach the goal: to be the first wide area in Europe with zero Co2 emissions.  Data was spread during the meeting on the sustainable development promoted by the Province of Siena and Apea with the collaboration of Siena University, at the Certosa di Pontignano. "The data of 2010 – the  province councillor for environment, Gabriele Berni says – is extraordinary and unique in Italy and Europe. It means we reached Kyoto's objectives 8 years earlier the 2020 deadline. The provisional valuations for 2011 analysis are increasing and this allows to be closer and closer to Siena Carbon free objective, an absorption capacity of emissions of 100%".

"In 2010 – the manager of the environment politics of the Province of Siena, Paolo Casprini says -  Co2 emissions were greatly reduced on the territory of the province of Siena. The province budget improved about 10% compared to 2009 and about 22% compared to 2006, the first year we introduced the first certified analysis. The considerable improvement of the emission budget is mainly due to the strong decrease of the fossil fuel consumption, from the gasoline, with a reduction of 31.5%, and of the diesel oil, with a reduction of about 17%. It is a consumption reduction due to the ongoing economic crisis but also a result of the power supply improvements and savings made by families, companies and citizens. At the same time, data comes from a strong improvements of energy production by renewable sources, particularly, by solar panels, which the Province of Siena has been supported since 2008 with announcements to improve the settlement of small plants".

Some data. "The improvement of the reabsorption capacity - Simone Bastianoni, responsible of  Reges project for the department of Chemistry of the University of Siena said – mainly comes from the reduction of the emissions on the territory, of about 20% and from the stabilization of the reabsorption capacity linked to the forest surface. Compared to the total amount of emissions, transportation is a heavy burden and represents a 45%; a 25% is represented by the heating plants, while the remaining comes from factories, from the waste disposal and from agriculture. The budget referred to 2010 registers an exceptional 92% of the power supply by renewable sources, with the confirmation of the important geothermal component, but also with a considerable increase in the production of energy by solar panels – a 50-fold growth compared to 2006 – and by recovering energy from waste and from landfill biogas".
The emissions budget -  supervised by the Gruppo di Ecodinamica (Group of ecodynamics of the  University of Siena) in collaboration with the Environment service of the province and realized with the support of MPS foundation -  is envisaged by Reges project - reduction of the emissions of greenhouse effect gases – started in 2006 by the Province of Siena with the objective of quantifying the emissions and absorptions of greenhouses gases on the territory, through the monitoring of the emissions in the atmosphere and of the absorptions by the forest areas. Data is certified by a third party, Rina Services Spa, according to the standard ISO14064.  The administration of the Province of Siena has been the first, in Europe, since 2006, to be provided with such a kind of system of certification. The objective was provided with a trusted system able to assess  the performance of the system of the territory concerning Co2 emissions and absorptions capacity, with the chance, from one hand, to assess the state of art, and from the other hand to assess the future actions, through the objective of "Siena Carbon free 2015".
